I think what this quote means is that is better to lose but you know you try your best. Because if you win by cheating you will feel good for just one moment but then later on you will feel guilty because you know you weren't honest and you cheated. For example if you use steroids to help you win a game at first you will feel good because you won but later on you will feel guilty because you cheated.
